Our extra large watch display came about because of our customers' demand for a stylish, modern stand that could hold an entire collection of wrist watches. Some features that we knew we wanted to focus on when coming up with the idea for the stand were the ability to hold up to 8 watches, a modern hardwood design that would look great with a variety of different materials, and a premium finish that would withstand the test of time. In order to get this sleek product that we had in mind, we sketched and built several different prototypes until we finally had the stand that we pictured. And thus, the Extra Large Hardwood Watch Display was born.
The Process
As with all of our products, we start out with rough lumber. For this piece, we use all-natural walnut and maple wood. We then mill the lumber down to the correct thickness for each part of the stand. Next, we hand drill holes into the lumber where the hardware will go, then glue and nail the individual pieces together. We then use a custom jig to mill the flat spot on the dowel, which is where the watches will rest on the finished product. Finally, when everything is put together, we finish each piece of the display by hand with semi-gloss lacquer that will both protect the wood from scratches and discoloration, and give it a sleek, glossy look. We use this semi-gloss finish rather than a stain or color so the aesthetic of the natural hardwood really stands out.
